When it comes to Baby Boomers and weight loss, it isn’t enough to just reduce the amount of food intake or to monitor the kinds of food being eaten. It’s also important to be able to incorporate the right amount of exercise with a diet plan that can be easily adhered to.
Also, before beginning anything, it is important to set some goals:
* What is your target weight?
* What is your main purpose for losing weight?
* When do you want to lose the weight by?
Make sure that these goals are realistic and attainable, so that the effects and results can really be felt and the dieter will not lose focus or drive.
One of the best things to do is to drink plenty of water. It helps the bodily functions, especially our digestive system. Water aids the body’s metabolism and plays a significant part in weight loss. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day can improve weight and a person’s overall health.
Watching what food is being eaten in an important part of dieting and weight loss for Baby Boomers. This part is crucial because as we all know; now that we’re older we can no longer freely eat whatever we want. For one thing, fruits and vegetables should be the food of choice. Make sure that each day contains at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables.
Eating fiber also helps, as this helps to make a person feel full sooner and it stays inside the body longer, eliminating the feeling of hunger and the need to snack. It also helps fat to move in the digestive system smoother. Avoid fried foods or those that are excessively oily – these are high in cholesterol and don’t do good things for the heart.
About 30 minutes of brisk walking or light jogging is also recommended as daily exercise. Combining this with strength training is also good. The recommended program would usually be 2-3 days of strength training, and aerobic exercises for the rest of the week. A simple program like this can help keep a person healthy and fit. As always, get doctor approval first.
Remember that for Baby Boomers, weight loss and health issues are definitely something to be pro-active about. Health is wealth, especially if you’re in your 50’s and above. With a simple diet and exercise program and the right amount of discipline, you can be on your way to a happy, healthy body in no time.
